3rd Week of the WHL 2017

Another Sunday, another three games played by the Vikings.

The Vikings women faced on Sunday the women of the Spartanz Handball Club. Similar to the Vikings, the Spartanz team has quite a few new faces and is still in the process of finding themsleves as a team. The Vikings women were welcoming back into the team Alex and Lizzie who are home in Wellington during the University break.
The Vikings women started strong and were bulding a lead a confortable (6:2, 9:3). Our volunteer Goalkeeper, Michaela, had an awesome game, saving heaps of shots and boosting the team moral and confidence. At the end we were playing relatively well but also surviced a couple of periods in which the Spartanz tried to claw their way back into the game. The final score was 24:15.
After all, this game and the result should give us plenty of confidence moving forward.

Up next, were the Vikings Danes playing the Victoria University Turtles team. The Turtles are the top team of Victoria University and they were looking to bring their A game today.
The Vikings boys started rather shaky and the Turtles managed to build a small lead (8:10) half way through teh first half. Though the Danes started to find their groove coming better into their team play, and especially into Fastbreaks. By halftime the Danes were able to build a 21:14 lead. The second half was mainly controlled by the Danes and nothing spectacular were happening, so the Danes secured the 36:26 win.

The last game of the day was played by the Vikings Norse team. The Norse were facing the VUW Royals. The Royals are another team of Victoria University which is new to this season.
The game started as expected, the artehr experienced Norse team building  quick lead (9:2) and struggled from there a bit with utilising their chances. Endless post hits and miseedshorts allowd the opponent to build some confidence and hope towards halftime (14:7).
The second half was not much different to the last part of the first half. While the Norse didn’t utilise plenty of clear scoring chances, the Royals stick to their script and stopped giving up. At the end, the Norse won comfortable 33:18 but they can surely not be happy with the scoring efficienty for this game.
Vikings HC Norse – Cassius, James W; Daniel 9, Pierre 6, Nico 5, PJ 5, Michael 4, Rakesh 4
VUW Royals – Andrija; Sean 9, Drew 3 Michael 3, Jaxson 2, George 1, Kian
